Before you fly

  • Confirm whether your nationality needs a visa and how long you may stay.
    Open the visa checker
  • Make sure your passport is valid for your whole stay and keep digital copies of every document.
  • Cover medical care for the period before you can join a local plan.

  • Do this before you travel if you can; many places do not take cash or foreign cards.

Day 1

  • Foreign visitors must be registered with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this for you; renters and hosts must do it in person.

  • You will need your passport. A Chinese number is required for most apps and services.
  • Police 110, ambulance 120, fire 119. Keep them available offline.

  • Open an account if you plan to stay and make sure mobile payments work.

  • Locate a clinic or hospital that serves English speakers before you need one.

  • Start early: permit applications take weeks and depend on your employer and documents.

  • If you plan to drive, start the conversion once your registration and residence are in place.
